Father's Day weekend

For Father's Day weekend we headed to the Olympics to hike, swim and explore.  This area is becoming one of our favorite places.  This time we camped at a Hip camp in Sequim.  It was our first time using one and we were pleasantly surprised.  Hip camps are land that people rent out.  Our host, Rob was fantastic!  He even watched our dogs while we hiked Mt Storm King.

We hiked to a magical cove from Salt Creek campground.

After the cove hike, we decided to enjoy the sunshine and take a dip in the lake. Even though it was cold, we all jumped in and swam in our clothes.

Heading up Mt Storm King.  It was a 2 mile hike from sea to summit, gaining 2,000 feet of elevation.  The hike was intense, and our legs were burning but we were  rewarded with amazing views of Crescent Lake and the mountains.

We are about to begin the unmaintained rope section to reach the summit.  There was a series of 5 ropes to help with the climb.

We got to the top and were lucky enough to have the whole thing to ourselves to enjoy the view.

Avery and I ran down the trail and used our extra time to check out Marymere falls.

McMurray Track and Field

 She's flying!

He missed 1st by a hair!  He did look over as he was running which may have made the difference.  He never ran the 100 again so I don't know how fast he was but on the relays he would fly.

Avery's team in the 4x100- 1st place at the podium

Avery 2nd place at the podium for discus

This year the kids decided to try out track since it was a short season due to covid.  They had an amazing season!  Avery tried discus, shot put, high jump, the 100 m dash and the 4x100.  He really enjoyed discus and the 4x100 and competed in those events in the championships.  He took 2nd in discus missing first by 1/4 of an inch and his team took first in the 4x100.  Alia tried the 400 m and the 100 m.  She ended up liking the 100 m dash the best.  In her last home meet she was 2nd in her heat, and the fastest 6th grader.  No 6th graders placed in the championships as it's hard to compete with 8th graders!  Both kids improved so much over the short season and came away liking track.

Spring Break in the California Redwoods and the Oregon Coast

We spent the first half of our trip in Crescent City California.  Our first day we hiked Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.  It was a great park with so many coastal redwoods.

This tree had two sets of roots, one on each side and then the branches grew up to find the sun.
Walking among the giants.

This tree was called The boy scout tree.  It was 24 feet wide and 240 feet tall.  In the next picture Scott looks so small next to it.

We got the kids scooters to enjoy at the campground.
We took an evening walk on the coast called Point St George.
Yummy, turkey bacon!
Maia all nestled into her nest.
It was a windy lunch, but a good one!
We spent some time at an adventure park called Trees of Mystery.

A cathedral of Redwoods.  The trees grow this way because a dead stump will shoot up new growth.
This was the brotherhood tree, it's over 2,000 years old, 19 feet in diameter and 297 feet tall.  It made our Fir trees in our yard that were 80 feet seem very small.
We rode a gondola up to the top of the mountain and then hiked a trail down.  The trail was steep and adventurous and we had to use ropes in some of the places.
They had a fun tree top walk in the redwoods.  We've done these walks before but this one was really high!
We found Bigfoot.
After our Redwoods adventures we had to get out of the deep, dark forest and find sunshine.  We drove 30 minutes up the coast and stayed in Brookings Oregon at Harris Beach State Park.
Lots of fun rocks to climb.
The rocks had lots of cool layers.
We had a great site looking out to the ocean.
Taking in the sunset.

Our favorite hikes were in the evenings when the beach was quiet and the dogs could run free.
